When cough persists

Chronic cough in children

A cough that persists or frequently returns deserves an assessment of its cause, not repeated treatment without a clear diagnosis.

01

What is assessed

  • Duration, timing and whether the cough is wet or dry
  • Links with infection, exercise or sleep
  • Wheeze, breathlessness and nasal symptoms
  • Growth and warning signs
02

Possible causes

Common patterns include post-infectious cough, asthma, rhinitis and prolonged wet cough. Management depends on the pattern and findings.

03

Seek urgent care for

  • Marked breathing difficulty or blue colour
  • Coughing blood
  • Poor growth or weight loss
  • Sudden onset after choking
