Tests & preventive care

Communication and M‑CHAT‑R/F screening

Early recognition without premature labels

Skills

Joint attention, pointing, response to name, imitation, play and language are considered together.

Screening

M‑CHAT‑R/F is commonly used at 18 and 24 months. It is not diagnostic and positive screens require follow-up questions and appropriate assessment.

Act early

Loss of skills or persistent communication concerns should not be watched indefinitely; hearing may also need checking.
